7 houseplant trends for 2025
No matter your plant style and home aesthetic, I guarantee there’s an indoor plant trend for you this year. Whether you’re new to houseplants or don’t know how to make a leafy impact in your home, one of these trends will get you started on the right track
1. Wild Houseplants
Long-time favorites, trailing plants will add a touch of elegance to homes this year. However, the emphasis is on leaving them as they are (at least partially) and putting your essential pruning tools aside.
‘Houseplants are, after all, plants, so letting them follow their instincts and grow wild is a great option,’ says plant nursery expert Tommy Suns. ‘You can achieve this perfectly by allowing trailing plants like vines to freely layer and avoiding over-pruning. If you want your space to feel natural and lush, this is a great option for you,' she explains.
Sure, indoor hanging plants are great for small spaces because you can keep them at your desired length by trimming them, and they don't take up floor space. But there's also a charm to letting them grow wilder, turning your home into a jungle. We'll continue to see pothos and ivy draped over mantelpieces, pushed back on shelves, and hung from the ceiling. A string of hearts is a popular choice for a pretty trailer with pretty heart-shaped leaves.
2. Open Landscapes
Terrariums are one of the hottest houseplant trends of all time, and this year is no different. Experts expect to see homemade terrariums everywhere in 2025, with indoor gardeners repurposing many materials to create one. "Terrariums are a unique houseplant trend for 2025, offering a modern and customizable way to incorporate greenery into any space," says Abby Berry, master gardener and founder of Abby's Garden Parties.
"Open-style terrariums filled with easy-to-care-for succulents are especially popular because they're low-maintenance and allow for creative expression," she adds. There are plenty of open-top terrariums available online, like this angled edge terrarium from Anthropologie — but it's also possible to make one from a vase or other open container, like this one from Amazon.
An added bonus of open-top terrariums is that they're easy to work with and allow space for terrarium plants to grow. "My favorite part about terrariums is how customizable they are. "You can decorate your terrarium however you like, which makes it much easier to add personality and let your creativity run wild," says Lotte Berendsen, certified botanist at the PlantIn app.
3. Hydroponic houseplants
Many gardeners believe that hydroponic gardening is the future of indoor gardening, which is why experts predict that more houseplant lovers will be growing indoor plants in water this year. "If your plant collection has become uncomfortably large and maintenance is a big job, consider growing your plants in hydroponics instead of soil," says Lotte.
As Lotte points out, in addition to being a space-saving solution, hydroponic houseplants can also be an attractive feature in your home. You can grow orchids in water and grow monsteras in water, among others. "Since this method usually uses clear containers, it also gives you the opportunity to watch your plant's roots develop and grow," adds Lotte. There are plenty of hydroponic kits available online - like this hydroponic garden kit from Amazon - but you can also use vases and containers. 4. Beautiful Breeding Stations
I often spend my time propagating easy-to-grow houseplants from cuttings, and there’s nothing I love more than creating a feature from propagating pieces. That’s why I’m happy to hear that beautiful breeding stations are set to become popular this year.
“You can make a DIY breeding wall using test tubes and command strips, or you can make a hanging or standing breeding station using wood and glass containers,” says Lotte. “Once your little plants outgrow the container, you can pot them up and fill the breeding vessels with new cuttings,” she adds.
As Lotte points out, there are a few ways to create your own breeding station. However, there are plenty of options for amazing breeding stations online — I personally love the look of this breeding station from Amazon, which doubles as a table centerpiece.
5. Vertical Indoor Gardens
Vertical gardening is a great way to maximize your space. Not only can you create a vertical garden outdoors, but you can also create one indoors. “Create a living plant wall by hanging trailing or climbing plants on your wall. This method can take a while to complete, but if you have a blank wall, it’s worth the effort,” says Lotte.
Living walls are a unique feature for the home. Not only are they visually appealing and will wow your visitors, they can also purify the air. This is especially true if you choose the best living wall plants for air purification and add some of the best air-purifying indoor plants. As Lotte suggests, you can create a vertical indoor garden by using hanging plants. Alternatively, you can use this living wall planter from Amazon to create your green wall.
6. Mismatched Planters
2025 isn’t just about expressing yourself with your plant choices – whether it’s the best tall indoor plants or the most unusual houseplants – you can also get creative with the planters they grow in. ‘If you’re more of a colorful person or need a little pop to decorate your home, consider purchasing colorful planters to house your plants in, or making some of your own using plant-safe products,’ suggests Tommy Sons.
Instead of choosing a color scheme, try pairing a mix of colors, materials, and textures together: ‘Use mixed containers with different types of plants to create an interesting display,’ says Lotte. ‘However, make sure the plants you group together have similar care needs so they can thrive under your care,’ she advises. If you’re keen to maintain some consistency, you can use the same style of planters in different shapes, like this set of ceramic planters from Amazon.
7. Classic Houseplants for Structure
While new plant trends are gaining popularity, you should still have those trusty old classics in your collection. Long-time favorites will play a major role in indoor plant arrangements this year. We’ll still see plant parents who love staples like ZZ plants, philodendrons, and, of course, monsteras.
Often, these classic houseplants can be used as the structure of your houseplant display. They provide not only height but also stability, while other plants are replaced for different seasons.
